3. Read the text and answer the question. who helped the girl cope with anxiety? This story happened to a 16-year-old named Suzy. She had shiny ginger hair, a slim body and a good taste in clothes. She did not have many friends. Suzy’s mom always said, “Don’t worry, you will meet someone special one day”. Once, she came across one advertisement that caught her eye. The advertisement said that a huge company would hold a singing competition in Hollywood. At first, it seemed a good idea to participate but then the fear of singing to many people engulfed her. Tom, Suzy’s father, noticed his daughter struggling with this problem and encouraged her to participate. I must say it was a long trip to Hollywood. Suzy picked her favourite song “Happy” for the competition. There she saw many talented people and that only intensified the fear. A boy called Eddie saw her painful expression and decided to cheer her up. The girl was surprised by his approach but she wanted to talk to someone at that moment. Eddie told her some funny jokes, they practised in singing to each other. Actually, Eddie even asked her for a walk after the competition. “I cannot go there, I will fail!”, she said. “Suzy, I believe in you, you have everything to blow their minds”, answered Eddie. When it was Suzy’s turn and she walked out onto the stage. She felt terrified because of the jury staring and bright lights. When the song started, her eye caught Eddie’s face. He was smiling. The supernatural strength came to her at the moment and she started singing. Eventually, she won the battle with her fear but the jury were picky and she did not win the contest. Anyway, it did not disappoint her. When she was walking across the pavement with Eddie, she said, “A journey is best measured in friends rather than miles. That is a great lesson I have learned.”

4. Read the text and answer the question. Did they win the competition? Once Bonitoes, George and Mary living in a far-away village decided to join a school party. The party was to take place on Sunday in the school yard. There was going to be a best fancy dress competition. So, the three friends decided to get the best costume to disguise themselves and to win the contest. Far from it! It turned out next to impossible for the friends to find a worthy idea. Actually, the village was cut out from the rest of the world because of great recent rainfalls. Bold George suggested an audacious idea of using a big balloon and flying to the nearest city. Luckily, Mary was sensible and discouraged the boys from doing it. She thought that the victory was not vital, and their school fellows were not their rivals. Then, Bonitoes decided to create costumes of noble knights and their lady. It was a fanciful idea, for he had missed the history lesson devoted to the epoch of knights. Bonitoes used everything handy from his house. By Friday the costumes were ready. Bonitoes invited his friends ready to surprise them. And he did… Looking at the costumes Mary and George felt embarrassed. On the one hand, Bonitoes had tried hard and deserved praise, but the costumes had nothing to do with knightship. Finally, Mary burst out laughing. She explained to her friend that he had created wonderful costumes of a bear and a shark, so they’d better go to the party in the costumes of animals. And she herself preferred to be a butterfly accompanying these creatures. Guess what? The friends won the competition!

5. Read the text and answer the question. what does the narrator think is important? New Year celebrations are one of the most memorable events which bring happiness. My project is aimed at finding out how young people celebrate the New Year. I have found some data, collected in a form of a table and would like to share my research results. In general, I can identify the main features of the statistics presented in the table. We can observe that the majority of teenagers, which is 68 %, prefer having a family dinner. In addition, it can be identified that only 2 % of respondents travel to another city or country. Comparing the data, it is worth mentioning that the percentage of adolescents going for a walk with friends, which is 16 %, is dramatically higher than the percentage of youngsters eating out in the café as a New Year celebration, which is 5 %. Moreover, it can be pointed out that the percentage of respondents who travel to another city or country (2 %) is slightly lower than the percentage of respondents who have a party at their friends’ home (9%). In my opinion, the subject of the research outlines an important problem. People spend a lot of money during the celebrations. Sometimes people find out that they go broke after the celebrations. I consider that it is important for the government to make different educational programs for these people so they can learn how to manage their money properly, to develop their finatial literacy. In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that the best way of celebrating New Year is having a family dinner because it is a good way to get united.

1) celebrate with all your might
2) I consider that it is important for the government to make different educational programs for these people so they can learn how to manage their money properly, to develop their finatial literacy.
